Chapter One: Setting up your telecommuting environment for success – is
telecommuting for you?
Today, you can be a one-person company, and look like a major company with offices, office staff, meeting rooms, meeting aids such as video conferencing, transcribing -- all the facilities and capabilities you need. You can work from home, or from any location, and use Collins Street Business Centre's facilities as and when you need them. It's the ideal solution. You have support when you need it, and you only pay for what you use.
What draws you to a telecommuting lifestyle?
Telecommuting may appeal to you, but you may not be certain why. Several years ago a magazine poll revealed the following reasons people chose for wanting to telecommute:
A desire to be their own boss: 72 per cent
A desire for less routine: 56 per cent
A desire for life change: 43 per cent
A desire to do more interesting work: 41 per cent
A dislike for the corporate world: 35 per cent
A desire to spend more time with their family: 33 per cent
One of these reasons, or several combined, reasons may be the major reason you want to telecommute.
Whatever the reasons, to create a successful transition, you need to focus on the environment: a location for your home office, on the equipment you'll need (see Chapter Two), and on how your working from home will affect others – discuss your move with your family first. Explain to your family the reasons you want to telecommute. You also need to make it clear that when you're working in your home office, you are working, and that you're not available to run errands, accompany family members on outings, or even to chat. If you talk it over with family members from the outset, they will know what to expect when you’re in your home office.
It's also important to think about motivation and time management, to ensure that you can guard against interruptions and can create an atmosphere and structure which will enable you to do your best work.
