Outsourcing is here to stay. Up until recently this largely comprised business process outsourcing (BPO) to countries such as India, Philippines and China, for example, so as to tap into vast pools of skilled, cheaper labour. This work was thus done in offshore facilities.

More recently there is a new trend, called rightshoring, where companies doing the outsourcing are creating a mix of traditional offshoring, with near shore, and/or on shore facilities. This stems from the need to look at speed, quality, security and cultural diversity when finding ways to improve efficiencies. Certainly work that requires a high degree of supervision was most often kept in-house; however rightshoring is now facilitating the outsourcing of even these tasks.

Many companies now adopting this approach are doing this for long term, strategic best practise to save money as well as enhance organisational flexibility. Their focus is now on growth using these techniques, rather than cutting costs to survive.

The new mantra - “go global, think local”.

So near shore or on shore practise is getting overseas outsourcing companies to use their lower cost labour (from home), to carry out work in either a neighbouring country, or at the client’s home base .

Indian firms have been especially aggressive, moving to provide near & on shore facilities as it allows them to move up the value chain and stop performing low end data entry jobs. The latter are being picked up by the Chinese and Philippine companies.

So in a nutshell, as local companies look to reduce their IT and other tasks to reduce costs, many are looking to engage near & on shore providers as a high value, low cost and low risk solution.
